I was commissioned by Playground Detroit to create artwork for athletic apparel company Lululemon‘s downtown Detroit store. This store is one of Lululemon‘s “Locals,” which features a community space and hosts programs with local non-profits — the curtain divides the community space from retail space of the store and is opened for activities. They also donate 50% of their profits to Downtown Boxing Gym. Since the store is so community focused, they wanted the piece to reflect the city and the pride the residents have for it. I chose to represent this with the Spirit of Detroit releasing a flock of the city’s pheasants with its leader bursting into flames like a phoenix, which represents the official city motto: Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus. (“We hope for better things; it shall rise from the ashes.”)
